There was a time when I was really committed, even a little excited, about recycling. I had just moved into my new house from an apartment and for the first time, those orange and green bins were all mine to use. I know it’s a little nerdy, but it happened, and I’m not ashamed of it. Patty Yung made the commitment to recycle and conserve in her home and she is much happier because of it. At first I was all about it, making sure to check labels, crush plastic bottles and sort paper from plastics just like I had been taught to do. But then, somewhere along the way and I’m not sure... Just when you thought it might be safe to get back on the roads, think again. Construction is still underway on many local roads such as South Alafaya Trail, Colonial Drive and the 408/417 interchange and they aren’t expected to be finished anytime soon. This may not sound like good news, especially to commuters who have been stuck in the backed up traffic along Alafaya Trail. The construction on the south portion of that road is not expected to be completed until fall 2013, but when it is finished, drivers should have nothing to complain about; the 3.8 mile stretch of road from Avalon... Since the departure of the No. 32 bus a few years ago, Bithlo residents have been awaiting the arrival of a Lynx bus that would serve their particular area. Unfortunately, those residents may have to wait a little bit longer. Although Lynx CEO John Lewis told Insight Magazine last December that the Bithlo Xpress 212 and a bus that would run from Waterford Lakes to Downtown Orlando were expected to begin running in spring 2012, they may actually start later than originally anticipated. According to Matt Friedman, manager of media relations for Lynx, the proposed services are still in the drafting... Read more
Cars zoom down the road at top speeds, zip around corners with reckless abandon and, if lucky, reach their destination without a scrape. While this may sound like a scene out of The Fast and the Furious, this actually describes how some people have been driving through some local neighborhoods. A recently installed speed hump in an East Orlando neighborhood. Photo submitted by Frank Yokiel. Because of this dangerous driving, local residents have banded together to control the speeding in their neighborhoods. Last year, residents of Mailer Boulevard and Lake Live Oak Drive in Avalon Park signed... Read more
Orlando International Airport (OIA) saw 35.4 million passengers last year, an increase of about 1.6 percent. And if Mike Patterson, director of construction at OIA, did his job right, none of them would notice the ongoing stream of construction, resulting in millions spent and countless improvements made. Baggage claim devices are just several of the construction projects currently underway at Orlando International Airport. Such developments include an assortment of baggage handling system repairs. One $7 million dollar project to reach completion this March is the replacement of several public... Read more
