Goodbye Jeep Commander, hello 110 miles per gallon Yamaha C3 Scooter. I watched a co-worker ride his scooter for two years and ever since I first laid eyes on it, I wanted one. It took some time, but, finally, in January of 2009, I purchased my scooter.  And let me tell you, it’s definitely on my “top ten list” of best purchases, hands down. Jesus Salguiero gets ready to ride his gas saving, two-wheeled daily driver. I never realized how much I would absolutely love it. I’ll be honest, at first I was scared to even own something that is classified as a motorcycle, seeing as how I never rode a motorized two-wheel vehicle... [Read more]

The year 2009 was a revelation for me. It’s when I took a step back and looked at my life. Even though my life changed for the better by becoming the market leader for Solantic Walk-In Urgent Care in 2008, something was still missing. It was in January of 2009 when I realized if I didn’t do something about my weight, I was going to end up with multiple health problems, just as every woman on my mother’s side of my family has. All I can remember is my mother telling me, “Please, don’t end up like me.” I knew that the reality of what my mother kept saying was coming true, and it was time to make a change. More than a year and a half ago, Mike Seif, left, poses with his wife and their son before beginning his diet and exercise overhaul. It was just over 18 months ago that I stood outside the fitness room at the Avalon Park YMCA staring through the large glass wall, mesmerized by about a dozen people on single wheeled bicycles frantically pedaling yet seemingly going nowhere. Little did I know I was about to join them, and embark on a journey of my own. The previous 14 years of my life, there was never any time to go to exercise and most of the food I consumed was what was easy and available. Ultimately, it took a toll on my body. As I got older,... [Read more]

Geraldine Kilberg is a part-time staff member at 85-years-old and loves her job. It was with some trepidation that I accepted the offer of a part-time position at age 74.  I knew something of the fine work that UCP of Central Florida and its dedicated staff achieved with young special needs children and hoped that I could be a part of that in a small way. I was introduced to their newly opened East Orange facility near the University of Central Florida, close to my home, and was almost immediately welcomed by its young, educated teachers and therapists. I was trained to keep the files of our classroom children and the files of those who came... [Read more]

I work for a pallet company based in Orlando called CHEP. Why is that important you ask? Well, it’s where My Story really begins. I got involved with food banking a few years ago when I was asked to coordinate our company’s interaction with the national food bank organization called Feeding America. At CHEP, our pallets help transport millions of pounds of food products every day and the link to food banking was, and is, a very logical one. However, I had no idea what food banking was or how it worked. I had even less knowledge about who was getting food assistance or how prevalent hunger was in my own community. Literally hundreds... [Read more]
